An intro to...minimalism

What is it?

Minimalism is all about reducing the amount of possessions you have in an attempt to move away from consumerism and the constant desire to want more things. Often, it means spending less money on material goods, and more on experiences or interests.

How can I get started?

The most obvious place to start if you're interested in minimalism is your wardrobe. Empty everything out onto your bed, and make three piles: keep, get rid, and unsure. Put the keep pile back in your wardrobe, and the get rid pile in a bag ready to take to your local charity shop. Put the unsure pile into a box and tuck it away at the back of your cupboard, under your bed, or somewhere else that you won't see it. Set yourself a calendar reminder for a month's time - if you haven't got the box out to wear an unsure item, get rid of them too.

Try to keep staple items and basics that go with lots of outfits, as that will reduce your total amount of clothes.

In a couple of months, go through the same process again, and keep going until you're happy with your new, minimal wardrobe. From then on, only make a purchase if it's something that goes with lots of your outfits, is really good quality and will last a long time, and wearing it makes you happy.

Where can I get more information?

There's a great documentary on minimalism called 'Minimalism: a Documentary About the Important Things' which is on Netflix at the moment (as of April 2018).
